About Alderney
Discover Alderney – Small Island, Big Character
Alderney may be just 3.5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, but this small gem—the third largest of the Channel Islands—is full of surprises. With a close-knit population of around 2,200, Alderney offers a rare blend of natural beauty, rich history, and genuine island hospitality.
Well-connected yet wonderfully remote, Alderney has its own airport and harbour, with direct scheduled flights from the UK and regular boat links.
Despite its modest size, Alderney has a lot to offer - dramatic coastal scenery, golden beaches, abundant wildlife, and a fascinating heritage. The island is dotted with charming pubs, relaxed bars, excellent restaurants, and independent boutiques—all delivered with a warm, welcoming feel.
The town of St Anne—just a short taxi ride or walk from Alderney Airport—is the island’s main shopping area, with a variety of independent retailers and local amenities lining its pretty cobbled streets.
Unspoiled and peaceful, Alderney enjoys a mild climate and a wonderfully laid-back pace of life. Although it lies just 8 miles from Normandy, 23 miles from Guernsey, 30 from Jersey, and 60 from the Isle of Wight, Alderney has remained blissfully untouched by mass tourism.
Alderney is known for its peace and tranquillity. It’s a safe, friendly island with a wealth of leisure opportunities—from a challenging 9-hole golf course and scenic tennis courts to a panoramic cricket pitch and lively local clubs.
Outdoor lovers will find plenty to enjoy: the island boasts some of the best sea fishing in the Channel Islands, and it’s a haven for birdwatchers, ramblers, and nature enthusiasts. Water sports such as sailing, swimming, surfing, and windsurfing are also popular.
Throughout the year, Alderney’s many societies and community groups host a lively programme of daytime and evening events—so there’s always something to see, do, or celebrate.
